Design-Build Contractor in BC: Why Broad Experience Makes Better Builders

Jack of All Trades, Master of None?

It is a phrase often used as criticism.

If someone looks at Highland Advantage Builders from the outside, they may think the same thing.

We provide home design, custom home construction, renovations, commercial and industrial millwork installation, civil infrastructure, subdivision development, rezoning support, and construction consulting.

That is a broad range of experience.

To some people, that raises questions.

Are they too expensive?

Are they spread too thin?

Can they really be highly skilled in all of those areas?

Those are reasonable questions.

There are companies that chase every opportunity they see and hope they can figure it out as they go. Sometimes they succeed. Sometimes they get in over their heads.

That is not how we built Highland Advantage Builders.

Our experience developed over time, one project at a time, as each project required more responsibility and a deeper understanding of how construction and development actually work.

And there is another part to the phrase that is often forgotten:

“Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one.”

We believe there is truth in that.

BC Design-Build Experience From Concept to Completion

Highland Advantage Builders is a BC Licensed Residential Builder built on decades of combined experience.

Matt grew up around construction and development. James came from a background in fabrication, manufacturing, and carpentry.

We met while working on a 24-unit townhouse development in Mission and have been working together ever since.

Since 2015, James and Matt have played central roles in planning, budgeting, coordinating, designing, and delivering subdivisions, custom homes, renovations, and civil infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia.

Why Design-Build Experience Matters

Because we work in design, development, and construction, we understand how decisions made early in a project affect cost, timelines, and buildability.

Design

We design homes and multi-unit projects with constructability, functionality, and budget in mind.

Renovations

We solve problems in existing buildings where hidden conditions are common.

Millwork

We bring precision, sequencing, and attention to detail.

Residential Construction

We integrate all trades and systems into a completed home.

Civil Infrastructure

We understand what must happen before construction begins.

Development and Rezoning

We understand municipal approvals, subdivision processes, and feasibility.

Consulting

We help clients avoid costly mistakes by asking the right questions early.

Why Highland Advantage Builders Focuses on Building

At our core, we are builders.

Our primary focus is custom homes, renovations, and multi-unit residential construction.

Our broader experience in home design, subdivision development, civil infrastructure, and consulting makes us better at what we do.

It helps us identify issues earlier, create more realistic budgets, and guide projects with greater confidence.

Benefits of Working With a Design-Build Contractor

Clients benefit from:

  • Design with construction and budget in mind

  • More realistic schedules and cost expectations

  • Early identification of risks

  • Better coordination with engineers, municipalities, and trades

  • Fewer avoidable surprises during construction

In short, we understand the full process from concept to completion.

Builders First

We are not trying to be everything to everyone.

We are builders first.

The reason we have experience in so many areas is because construction and development naturally overlap.

Over time, that experience has made us better builders.
